PYC4812 - Sports Psychology

This module provides valuable and essential practical knowledge and competencies that allows one to develop much broader skills, to be applied in practicing psychology. It is an interdisciplinary field which is relatively new, but very exciting, tapping into various psychological theories and sport science, as well as management principles.

The contents is quite voluminous, covering a vast number of topics in the field of sport psychology, ranging from motivation, goal setting, mental toughness, cognitive and psychological skills training, leadership, communication, drug abuse in sport to rehabilitation and injury management. These attributes not only assist athletes, sport practitioners and sport psychologist, but also sport coaches, life coaches, management, family, and other support structures. It further provides the athlete with techniques to enrich their lives and well-being, beyond sport engagement, skills also very valuable for students as well as everyone in everyday life.

 

Students are guided to enable an understanding and gaining knowledge of this discipline by:

-       Assisting with 2 assignments of which the:

o   First, consist of various parts, such as - Defining applied sport psychology; Writing an annotated bibliography on specific psychological skills, by means of research articles and empirical studies related to the topic (i.e. sourcing relevant peer reviewed articles, reviewing articles, writing of an annotated bibliography by selecting the most significant information on the purpose, hypotheses, sample, measures, procedures, design, statistical results, interpretation of results, and implications; and providing a brief report by summarise the findings from the three sources detailing the results gleaned on the topic of your choice.

o   Second, entails a practical assignment, introducing the student to the world of the sport psychologist/ practitioner as well as sport psychology literature. Students are required to engage with an athlete and providing a report on this process. Guidance are provided in how to engage with the athlete, ethical considerations, drafting of the  report, i.e. facilitating the initial intake, background on the athlete, literature review, proposed interventions, feedback from the athlete and reflection.

 

-       Engaging with the prescribed material and providing notes with model answers of the prescribed learning objectives to assist in exam prep.
