HMPYC80 - Research Methodology

This is a mammoth module with 7 components to it.  In tutorial classes, we help students to complete all the assignments, as it is highly advisable because they prepare you for the exam and contributes to at least 20% of your final mark.  It is also excellent preparation for your master’s thesis, which consists of 50% of your Master’s overall mark.  The module consists of the following components:

  1. Methodology (consists of â…“ of your exam paper).

  2. Learning how to conduct a research proposal review (consists of â…“ of your exam paper).

  3. Learning how to be a good review for peers’ proposals.

  4. Learning how to conduct a research article review (consists of â…“ of your exam paper).

  5. Learning how to be a good review for peers’ articles.

  6. Producing a research proposal.

  7. Producing a research article.

 â€‹

During tutorials we work on a "multi-level" approach.  Initially we explain what a

research report is and help students to understand the different components to the

research.  At the same time, the tutor teaches the students how to review a proposal

(and later a research article) and assists students in putting together a research

proposal.  In between, we also are teaching aspects of methodology that relate to

this section of the work (correlation/t-tests/multiple regression ANOVA etc.).

During tutorials we approach the module in the following manner.

1.  Provide assistance with all assignments (there are 6 assignments)

1.1   Conducting a review on a proposal

1.2   Writing up your own proposal (teach you how to produce a proposal that is at Masters level).

1.3   Reviewing your peers’ proposals (you will get approximately 5 of your peers’ proposals to review).

1.4   Conducting a review on an article

1.5   Writing up your own article (teach you how to produce an article that is at Masters level).

1.6   Reviewing your peers’ articles (you will get approximately 5 of your peers’ articles to review).

2.  Teach methodology (will be covered in the exam).

3.  Exam prep:  We go through past exam papers and explain areas that students may be struggling with.
